ECC Connection Friday, May 1, 2020 Carol's Corner - A Message from Our Director My child is missing playing with their family and friends. How can I practice socialization with my child?
Socialization allows your children to learn how to listen to others, take turns, share, empathize, and be a good sport when they win or lose. These are life long skills that we sometimes still struggle with as adults. The good news is that there are meaningful ways to work on socialization while we are at home.
You can practice the concept of sharing in your everyday life while you are home. At breakfast, you can ask your child, "When you are finished with the cereal, can you please pass the box to me?" Before lunch, you can ask your child to help set the table for everyone. When it's time to sit down you may want to say, "Thank you for setting my place mat (spoon or fork depending upon their age); that was so helpful." At dinner, maybe he/she helped you cook. You can say, "Your mixing and pouring really helped make dinner delicious."
Playing games with children is another wonderful way to teach social skills. Even the youngest child can put something in a box and you can say; "I wonder where the star went?" For all ages, you can play Hide and Seek where you are actively interacting with others. Playing board games with a sibling or parents is important too. The children learn to practice all of the social skills of how to act when you win, lose, and how to wait for a turn.
You can even play virtual games with friends and grandparents. Make a scheduled time for a playdate. Some interactive suggestions include; hiding something in a napkin and asking, "What do you think is under my napkin?" Your child can give clues and the friend or relative can guess what they are hiding. Many of these activities involve skills such as: taking turns, recall and learning visual cues.
Your children will learn these social skills even though we have the current stay at home mandate. Enjoy your children as much as you can. You will look back some day and remember playing those games and bonding with your child like never before.
