ECC Connection Friday, May 29, 2020 Carol's Corner - A Message from Our Director My child continues to get out of bed and come into my bedroom every night. How do I stop this practice?
The key to having your child sleep through the night is for your child to have the ability to go to sleep on his or her own. If the parent needs to stay in their child's room for their child to go to sleep, they will need the adult there in the middle of the night when they wake up. All humans wake up in the middle of the night but as adults, we have learned how to put ourselves back to sleep, such as moving our pillow or blanket a certain way. When your child wakes up in the middle of the night they will need you, their "lovey" to go back to sleep. So it makes sense when your child stirs in the middle of the night that they will go to your bedroom because they need you.
How do I give my child the skill of going to sleep on his/her own?
I suggest using a "lovey", a soft comfort item (that can be washed), to help your child go to sleep on their own. If and when your child stirs in the middle of the night they can use the same "lovey" to soothe themselves and to help them go back to sleep on their own.
